Renewable World's Steering Group is made up of a diverse team of leading experts from the renewable energy, academic and development sectors, with the purpose of supporting the trustees in guiding the strategic direction of the organisation.

Becky Buell - MIT
Becky is a Research Fellow in the Urban Studies and Planning Department at MIT, leading a new cross-departmental centre that supports green transformation in cities around the world. Prior to her work with MIT she worked with Oxfam GB over 15 years in various senior management positions in Central America and Mexico, and in Oxfam's Campaigns and Policy Division. She developed Oxfam's work on the private sector's role in poverty reduction, leading on several initiatives to analyse the "poverty footprint" of companies in developing countries. Becky most recently served as Oxfam’s Senior Advisor for Strategy and Innovation, working with the board and directors on overall organizational direction and development, and managed a portfolio of projects, primarily relating to cross-sector collaboration on climate change, renewable energy, and sustainable supply chains.
In an independent capacity, Becky has advised a number of NGO boards on organisational strategy, and provides coaching to senior executives. Becky was an ELIAS Fellow in 2006-7 and continues to work with an ELIAS project team taking forward systems innovation on renewable energy as a means for economic development in poor and marginalised communities.
Dr Judith A-Cherni - Imperial College London
Judith has led international research projects of interdisciplinary teams on renewable energy technology, sustainable development, and economic and environmental policy, with a focus on Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa. She manages a research project on renewable energy for sustainable rural livelihoods. The project includes solar, micro-hydro and other renewable energy applications in poor households in remote locations in developing countries. She has developed new methodologies including multi-criteria approaches to assess performance conditions and to assist decision-making.
Her current interests focus on renewable energy technology in relation to environmental protection and sustainable livelihoods of rural and urban populations. She is particularly interested in both how institutions and policy-makers address the issues of energy development, and developing methodologies and systems that can assist in this process. Judith lectures and supervises post-graduate students.
Warren Diogo - Ascot Renewco
Warren joined Ascot Renewco in the build up to its launch in August 2007. Since this time Warren has worked to establish Renewco as a leader in the renewable energy insurance sector. Warren’s primary responsibility as underwriter is to grow the renewable energy book of business profitably following the syndicate’s business plan and underwriting parameters. Warren has been involved as lead underwriter on a number of landmark renewable energy projects in the offshore wind, biomass and tidal energy sectors.
Warren has 8 years of insurance industry experience previously working with Marsh Ltd in London and Perth, Australia where he led their climate change initiative for Europe, Middle East and Asia Pacific. During this time he worked closely with Marsh’s Renewable Energy Team focusing on new business and product development. He was also the project manager for several risk consultancy assignments with the UNEP, which focused on risk management instruments available to support renewable energy projects.
In various roles Warren has worked closely with a range of clients including project developers, financiers, consultants, traders and specialist insurers in the areas of climate change and renewable energy.

Stuart Hall - Natural Power
Stuart began working in wind energy in 1991 as a volunteer with an enthusiasm for sustainable development, and a belief in the ability for renewable energy to effect positive social, environmental and economic change. He was instrumental in the development of Scotland’s first wind farm in 1994. In 1995 he founded Natural Power, a life-cycle wind, wave and tidal consultancy and service provider. With over 100 staff and offices in Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland, France, Canada and Chile, Natural Power has become a respected international partner. Stuart has been a driving force behind the commercialisation of a number of industry leading products and tools to assist developers and owners.
A founding member of the Scottish Renewables Forum, and long-term member of the old BWEA council, Stuart was honoured with the “Outstanding Contribution to the Industry” gong at the 2008 Green Energy Awards. He has managed to maintain most of his enthusiasm in tacked!
Jesper Holst - Dong Energy
Jesper Holst is a business developer at DONG Energy Renewables and has been working with offshore wind projects for the past 3 years in the UK. He has worked on environmental projects in Mexico, Thailand and Spain. Whilst working at ENERGI E2 he was a key member of the project team that successfully led to offshore consents for the London Array project.
Currently, he is responsible for the consents on the Gunfleet Sands project and involved with general business development on many of DONG’s projects in the UK. His educational background includes an MSc in Environmental Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark and at present he is half way through an MBA at Henley Management College. He joined the BWEA Offshore Strategy Group in October last year and is responsible for the Consents and Licensing Group.
Jonny Lewis - RPS
Jonny is the Offshore Renewables Manager of RPS Energy with responsibility for the day-to-day running of the offshore renewables business within RPS. He is a qualified marine biologist with 10 years experience in marine environmental consulting, specialising in the environmental assessment of major marine developments including marine aggregate extraction, port & harbour developments, coastal defence schemes and wind, wave and tidal energy projects. Jonny has worked at RPS since October 2006 and has been involved in a wide range of offshore renewable projects, both in the UK and overseas. His particular areas of expertise include Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), marine ecology and fisheries, nature conservation and consenting.
Jonny is currently acting as Project Manager for the on-going Triton Knoll Rd2 project (npower), as well as taking the role of Environment & Consents Manager for the Lincs Rd2 project, on behalf of Centrica. In 2007, Jonny project managed the Gunfleet Sands 2 project (DONG Energy) and was responsible for co-ordinating a wide range of environmental surveys associated with this project. Jonny has also carried out work on behalf of E.ON Climate & Renewables on their Pembrokeshire Tidal Energy Project.
John Magrath - Oxfam
John Magrath has been researching the implications of climate change for Oxfam and its work for several years. As a journalist and researcher, he has worked for Oxfam GB for over 20 years in various roles, including Press Office Manager, Executive Assistant to the Director, and Programme Researcher.
He is he author of a number of reports including Turning up the Heat: climate change and poverty in Uganda, Climate Alarm; disasters increase as climate change bites, and Africa - Up in Smoke II - the second report on Africa and global warming from the Working Group on Climate Change and Development.
John Magrath is a judge for the Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy and an advisor to the Comic Relief climate change mitigation grants programme. Oxfam works with others to overcome poverty and suffering.
Dr Jacob Mulugetta - Surrey University
Yacob is a lecturer at the Centre for Environmental Strategy, the leading centre for Sustainable Development related research and postgraduate teaching in the UK. He has 15 years of research and teaching experience specialising in the links between basic infrastructure provision and human welfare, with a particular focus on access to energy services to address poverty and inequality concerns.
His current research and advisory work lies in the inter-sectoral links between energy, environment and health; and the role of policy in facilitating access to clean and affordable energy services to poor communities. He has research experience in resource assessment issues, scenario analysis, policy processes and their impact on diverse communities, and participatory approaches towards multi-stakeholder decision processes. He has participated in a number of energy-related projects, funded by the Department for International Development, UNDP and ESKOM-South Africa.
Alex Murley - British Wind Energy Association (BWEA)
Alex is the Small-System Manager at the British Wind Energy Association where he is responsible for co-ordinating the representation of the UK micro-and small-wind industry to the British public, national media, and the UK government. Alex sits on the UK Microgeneration Certification Scheme Steering Group whilst also actively supports numerous BWEA Small Systems working groups which tackle technical, policy, and communication issues within industry.
Alex has a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from Bath University, and has worked within ethical supply chain management, the environmental charity sector, as well as the wholesale electricity market.
Sam Pryor - SeaRoc
Sam works for SeaRoc, marine specialists working exclusively in the renewable energy sector, and has fulfilled various roles in both product and business development and marketing. He is currently project manager for SeaPlanner™ a software tool for marine renewables projects. In his spare time, Sam is studying for an MBA.
A founder member of the Koru Foundation, Sam project managed the early development phases. He was involved with the Trustees in developing the ethical policies, values and mission of the charity. He was closely involved in building networks with NGOs and the renewables industry.
Dr Teodoro Sanchez-Campos - Practical Action
Teo is a renowned specialist in rural electrification and renewable energies who has gathered worldwide experience designing and implementing rural electrification programmes and projects as well as controlling the budgetary and management side. In his present post he works with Practical Action’s country offices, giving policy and technical advice as well as advocacy work in the field of energy and rural electrification. He has published many papers and lectures widely.
Teo’s previous experience has included providing assistance to UK planners and developers in the field of rural energy technology and providing technical support to country offices such as Nepal, Zimbabwe and Peru in the field of Renewable Energies. His experience also includes the implementation of a revolving fund for renewable energies, research and policy activities and technology development and transfer.
Frauke Urban - IDS, Sussex University
Frauke is a research fellow at the Climate Change and Development Centre at the Institute of Development Studies IDS, University of Sussex. She is an environmental scientist specialising on the links between energy, development and climate change. She previously worked in the Netherlands, China and Germany. She did her PhD in energy sciences and modelled low carbon energy transitions as climate change mitigation options for China and India. She lead several research projects to assess the possibilities for renewable and low carbon energy in the Chinese power sector, the economy of Beijing and poor rural households in India which do not have access to electricity.
Frauke’s research interests are low carbon development, energy transitions, renewable energy, climate policy, climate change mitigation (and its link to adaptation). She currently works on enabling environments for low carbon economies for least developed countries and develops projects for low carbon energy and technology transfer for China and SE Asia.
Dr Stephen Wyatt - Carbon Trust
Stephen heads up the marine renewables activity at the Carbon Trust, working directly with industry to support technology development, and with Government and the investment community to overcome market and commercial barriers. Prior to the Carbon Trust Stephen worked in technology consultancy conducting due diligence for a variety of emerging technology investments, and working on Government funded technology development programmes.
Stephen holds a PhD in materials science and also brings international experience having spent time in various countries including East Africa, South America, Tibet and Nepal.
